In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Smashing Pumpkins’ iconic album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, frontman Billy Corgan is collaborating with the Lyric Opera of Chicago for a series of opera performances reimagining the record. Corgan has dubbed the opera shows, A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness, which are scheduled to take place over seven evenings starting on November 21. Corgan is working with Lyric head John Mangum and his musical partner James Lowe to present “a new commission inspired by one of the greatest alternative albums of all time.” The performances will feature Corgan and special guests alongside the Lyric Opera’s Orchestra and Chorus, all taking part in a unique sonic and visual experience. “Opera and rock both tell stories of heightened emotions, and I am excited for both fans of my music and traditional opera fans to hear some truly inspired work,” Corgan said. The shows will take place at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on November 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, and 30. Tickets go on sale April 11. (Billboard)
